A lot of people don't realize it's up to them where they get their car repaired.When you call your insurance company to start your claim, they'll ask where you want to get your car repaired. A lot of times, people don't even know what body shops are near them, so they'll ask the claim rep for recommendations.Insurance companies may have agreements with certain body shops (called "Direct Repair" providers). Direct Repair providers agree to certain pricing and practices set by the insurance company. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but ultimately these agreements are designed for the insurance company, not the consumer. And it doesn't mean you have to use that shop. Your insurance company can't say you have to take it to their shop because "You'll get a better warranty."If an insurance company tries to direct you to a specific body shop, that's called 'steering' and it's illegal. Your best bet is to do a little research ahead of time so you're prepared when you need to make a decision.
